FAT MAN, THIN MAN, FATTER MAN...GOOD GRIEF!! I have been "overweight" or whatever other descriptive you care to use to call me fat, most all of my life with occasional spurts of weight loss. I've been up and down the scale several times, (mostly up) and have gained and lost over 300+ pounds in my life. However, I've begun to see myself as more than just a "fat" person...it gets easier to take on a different outlook when one doesn't fight for every breath, or have joints scream in pain every time you move. WE DO NOT WALK ALONE!

"In everyone's life, at some time, our inner fire goes out. It is then burst into flame by an encounter with another human being. We should all be thankful for those people who rekindle the inner spirit."  Albert Schweitzer

There is an inexhaustible list of people who have inspired me to be what I am today!  I take credit for anything negative that I portray, but the positives largely come from others!

Not the least of which is the Lord Jesus Christ, my wife Nancy,  my daughters Laura and Emily, my mom & dad, my sister Julie (and Ronnie), my brother Paul (and Judy),  my sister Susie, my coach/mentor/dietitian/friend Megan (and her fantastic staff!!),  Fred, Tim, Dr. Steve, Don and Amy, Jerry and Mary, Sue Jazzer, Daneel, Brian, John, and the list would go on for miles, and I already risk hurting someone's feelings I haven't included!

But you are included in my heart!

Thank you God for all the wonderful people in my life!

HOME OF THE FREE, LAND OF THE BRAVE!

So I've been on a break from this blog for two months...the bloom has been off the rose for a little while.  That's typical me...into something with all four feet and then cooling off.

Weight management, while never fun, has been less so these last four months.  I've managed to put some weight back on...about 16 pounds.

From a high of 379 to a low of 272 to a current weight of 288.

Learning to live "free" of overeating takes skill and determination and guts.  It's not for sissies.  It's hard as hell!

Fighting a roller coaster of emotions and self-loathing and also not using food to buffer these feelings is a lifelong process...I will never "arrive".  I also do not have to give up...and while there have been days, I generally intend to learn the skills needed to prolong my life (and my quality of life) by continuing to manage my weight while trying not to beat myself up and/or quit because of consistent backsliding.

I just need to backslide in the other direction!

I have taken a little "rest" from writing the last couple of months as I haven't been as succesful in weight loss lately and I have been humbled some, I definitly do not have all the answers.  I was writing as if everyone was entitled to my opinion...which of course they are...but I got a little cocky.
It was a heck of a lot easier to write it when I was losing consistently and feeling so much better about myself.  That being said, most people who struggle with their weight have times of inconsistencies and weight gain, if not flat out failure.

Writing from a position of weakness, could actually make it a better blog...I suspect many people will relate.  Finding that voice of hope and encouragement myself so I can write the way I wish to is the process I am currently going through.
I'm not sure how often I will have something to say, but as I do, it will show up here. In the meantime, if you are new to the blog, there is a wealth of information here already.

Living free from the tyranny of food, and being brave enough to write about it is now my goal.  Along with continued weight management  and ultimately weight loss!

God Bless the USA!

And thanks to my new friend Scott who nudged me back to this blog!

THE LORD GOD MOST HIGH, CREATER OF THE UNIVERSE, DIED FOR ME!

"In the beginning the Word already existed.
The Word was with God,
and the Word was God.
He existed in the beginning with God.
God created everything through him,
and nothing was created except through him.
The Word gave life to everything that was created,
and his life brought light to everyone.
The light shines in the darkness,
and the darkness can never extinguish it."

And that was proven on Resurrection Morning when THE Light of the world arose from the dead, having paid the price for my sins.

I often lose perspective when I stand on the scale.  Seeing what the numbers tell me usually dictate how I will feel for the next several days.

My little "universe" is so insignificant...less than a drop of water compared to the oceans depths.  Yet as the ignorant ancients thought,  I act as if the universe revolves around my world!

Since the God of all things seen and unseen died for me, is it unreasonable to decide to live for Him?

Surely life is more than fat and thin, exercise and calories, guilt and shame for eating too much!

Jesus came that we might live life to its fullest, fat or thin, to serve Him because He loved us and died for us when we weren't the least bit interested in Him.

He paid a debt He did not owe, I owed a debt I could not pay...such wondrous LOVE!

HE IS RISEN INDEED!!

STRESS

A lecturer when explaining stress management to an audience raised a glass of water and asked, "How heavy is this glass of water?"
Answers called out ranged from 20g to 500g.

The lecturer replied, "The absolute weight doesn't matter.
It depends on how long you try to hold it.
If I hold it for a minute, that's not a problem.
If I hold it for an hour, I'll have an ache in my right arm.
If I hold it for a day, you'll have to call an ambulance
In each case, it's the same weight, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes."

He continued,
"And that's the way it is with stress management.
If we carry our burdens all the time, sooner or later,
As the burden becomes increasingly heavy,
We won't be able to carry on."

"As with the glass of water,
You have to put it down for a while and rest before holding it again.
When we're refreshed, we can carry on with the burden."

"So, before you return home tonight, put the burden of work down. Don't carry it home You can pick it up tomorrow."

"Whatever burdens you're carrying now,
Let them down for a moment if you can.
So, my friend, Put down anything that may be a burden to you right now. Don't pick it up again until after you've rested a while."

Here are some great ways of dealing with the burdens of life:

* Accept that some days you're the pigeon,
And some days you're the statue.

* Always keep your words soft and sweet,
Just in case you have to eat them.

* Always wear stuff that will make you look good
If you die in the middle of it.

* Drive carefully. It's not only cars that can be
"Recalled" by their maker.

* If you can't be kind, at least have the decency to be vague.

* If you lend someone $20 and never see that person again,
It was probably worth it.

* It may be that your sole purpose in life is simply to be kind to others.

* Never put both feet in your mouth at the same time,
Because then you won't have a leg to stand on.

* Nobody cares if you can't dance well.
Just get up and dance.

* When everything's coming your way,
You're in the wrong lane.

* Birthdays are good for you.
The more you have, the longer you live.

* You may be only one person in the world,
But you may also be the world to one person.

* Some mistakes are too much fun to only make once.

* We could learn a lot from crayons... Some are sharp, some are pretty and some are dull. Some have weird names, and all are different colors, but they all have to live in the same box.

*A truly happy person is one who can enjoy the scenery
on a detour.

THROWING OUT THE TROPHIES!

Every once and awhile, I'll read a news story how some high school somewhere will be moving to a new location and not wish to relocate all the old trophies that are on display at the old school. Or they have run out of room for the new trophies and start disposing of old trophies and pictures from a bygone school era.

Trophies and ribbons are important marks of accomplishment and can be very meaningful. Men (and women) will march into a hail of bullets in wartime and feel justly rewarded when a colored piece of ribbon is pinned on their chest.

Something about being acknowledged.

Everyone likes an "atta boy" or "atta girl".  A pat on the back works wonders for me and my tail usually wags ferociously!

Those trophies and ribbons were so important at one time that they were cherished and put behind locked glass cases so everyone could admire the accomplishments.  Every time one would walk by it, it would compel memories of victory, be it for football or the chess team.

Faded team pictures of years gone by lined these shelves framed and standing as resolute reminders of the glories of youth and vitality...of valiant winners.

How could things of such importance now have so little regard by the current generation?

SLOPPY COPIES

The subject was perfection and its elusiveness when it comes to proper eating last Monday at the weight loss center.

I remember many diets in the past where if I had a "bad" meal...well that was it for the day..."No more dieting today, I've already blown it so I'm gonna just keep on eating badly for the rest of this day and start again tomorrow."

That was the mindset...if I can't eat "perfectly" at all times I'll quit today and start tomorrow ~ or the day after that ~ or next Monday ~ or the first of the month ~ or after my birthday ~ or after my spouse's birthday ~ or after Mickey Mouse's new movie comes out.

Looking back on it now, I realise I was just setting myself up to fail.  The last person that was truly perfect, now sits at the right hand of the Father.

WORDS OF WISDOM

Someone has written these beautiful words. Read and try to understand the deep meaning of them .

1. Prayer is not a "spare wheel" that you pull out when in trouble, but it is a "steering wheel" that directs the right path throughout.

2. Friendship is like a BOOK. It takes few seconds to burn, but it takes years to write.

3. All things in life are temporary. If going well, enjoy it; they will not last forever. If going wrong, don't worry, they can't last long either.

4. Old Friends are Gold! New Friends are Diamond! If you get a Diamond, don't forget the Gold! To hold a Diamond, you always need a Base of Gold!

5. Often when we lose hope and think this is the end, GOD smiles from above and says, "Relax, sweetheart, it's just a bend, not the end!

I WAS HONORED TO SPEAK TO A GROUP OF DOCTORS THE OTHER NIGHT

Synopsis: The weight loss center I attend held an informational meeting for local doctors and healthcare providers this week, and asked me and two other of their clients to speak about our experiences with their weight loss/management program.

The weight loss center is striving for more doctor referrals for their patients with weight struggles. I had planned to share about my doctors role in my experience but did not know he would be there.  Along with the honor of being asked to speak, it was an extra blessing for me to be able to publicly thank him!  This is what I said with some slight editing...

~ I’ve been asked to share a little bit of my story with you.

I have struggled with being overweight all my life.

In 1982 I went to Weight Watchers and lost 45 pounds and achieved goal weight of 195 pounds. In 1990 I lost 117 pounds at Weight Watchers and was below goal weight at 183 pounds.

Three years later I came under Dr. Steve Gordon’s care. I had gained back close to 70 pounds and weighed in around 250 pounds. At that time I had no need for a doctor other than for when I would get an infection and need antibiotics or such.

In the 18 years he’s been my doctor, he has treated me for Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, G.E.R.D, depression, sleep apnea ~ and ~ I ballooned up to 382 pounds. If you’ve been doing the math in your head, yes I doubled my weight in 20 years!

BEARING POTENTIAL FOR THE NEW YEAR - LESSONS DERIVED FROM THE ROSE

"When we plant a rose seed in the earth, we notice that it is small, but we do not criticize it as "rootless and stemless." We treat it as a seed, giving it the water and nourishment required of a seed. When it first shoots up out of the earth, we don't condemn it as immature and underdeveloped; nor do we criticize the buds for not being open when they appear. We stand in wonder at the process taking place and give the plant the care it needs at each stage of its development. The rose is a rose from the time it is a seed to the time it dies. Within it, at all times, it contains its whole potential. It seems to be constantly in the process of change; yet at each state, at each moment, it is perfectly all right as it is."

— W. Timothy Gallwey (The Inner Game of Tennis)

It seems I find myself starting over...a lot!

The new year some how psychologically conditions us as a people to foment some sort of list of "resolutions."

I have never met a resolution I couldn't break, usually within 72 hours.  This is because, for me anyway, I am motivated by what I should do, not what I really want to do.

Well, I want to do it as long as it is easy and requires no sacrifice.

Ain't it the truth!

I'm my own worse critic too.  I can be pretty harsh on myself.  I probably deserve some of it, however the guilt that is associated with failure usually is "solved" by eating...which solves nothing and only exacerbates the problem.

A truly vicious and insane cycle.

So if I were to resolve anything this year, it should be to love myself more, and not be so motivated by guilt and fear.

When I reread the above sentence it makes me want to shout: "Psychobabble!!"

SANTA EXPLAINS THE REAL MEANING OF CHRISTMAS ~ Author Unknown

This is how it happened: I just finished the household chores for the night and was preparing to go to bed, when I heard a noise in the front of the house. I opened the door to the front room and to my surprise, Santa himself stepped out from behind the Christmas tree.

He placed his finger over his mouth so I would not cry out. "What Are You Doing?"  I started to ask. The words choked up in my throat, and I saw he had tears in his eyes. His usual jolly manner was gone. Gone was the eager, boisterous soul we all know.

He then answered me with a simple statement "TEACH THE CHILDREN".

I was puzzled; what did he mean? He anticipated my question, and with one quick movement brought forth a miniature toy bag from behind the tree. As I stood bewildered, Santa said, "Teach the Children: Teach them the OLD MEANING of Christmas. The meaning that now-a-days Christmas has forgotten.

SOMETIMES MEMORIES HURT ~ SOMETIMES IT HURTS MORE TO FORGET!

Last January it became abundantly clear (ahem) that I needed a new winter coat.  Winter was "hard" last year but zipping up the jacket was harder.

Walking around in a too small unzipped coat open to the elements became more uncomfortable than going to buy a new ( and larger) jacket.

I went by myself.  I was embarrassed enough to have to do this (again) let alone have a family member (read that wife) tag along and not say anything.  I seldom like the tone of her silence!

As I walked the aisles of the local farm and ranch store I looked over the pickings left over from the late fall and Christmas season.

In the past couple of years my shirt sizes had gone from 2X - 3X to 4X - 6X depending on the "generosity" of the cut.

"Generosity" - it never ceases to amaze me how we humans try to dress up a pig with lipstick and perfume!

"I wouldn't even need a larger coat if the manufacturer would have been a little more 'generous' in his cut with this one!"

EMOTIONAL EATING

Last weekend friend wife and I spent some time in Omaha.  Being a creature of habit, I fixed my usual breakfast of a protein shake in coffee on Saturday morning.

On our way to Nebraska Furniture Mart we got into a small little tiff...it was my fault!

Immediately I felt like I wanted to got to a sit-down restaurant for a BIG breakfast.

The fact that I noticed this feeling is a wonder.

Ordinarily, before my new weight management outlook, I would have never thought about WHY I wanted to go eat...I would have just reacted by eating.

It was very irritating to feel this "NEED" to eat and not give into it. And I was already angry at myself about the little disagreement we had...here's how little it was...it is now 5 days later and I have NO IDEA what the spat was about!

Typical guy!

It was astounding to me to realize that these angry and irritating emotions immediately compelled me to go eat.

Old habits...very hard to resist, but I did somehow.

STICK TO IT!

"Observe the postage stamp: its usefulness depends on its ability to stick to one thing."

Let me not be afraid of the work required or the difficulties I may endure in trying to improve myself, O God.  Grant me the light to see what glory lies ahead. Amen.

"I'LL START AGAIN ON MONDAY" A guest post by Lysa TerKuerst

"No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us." Romans 8:37 (NIV)

Have you ever caught yourself compromising your healthy eating plan with the little "I'll start again on Monday" escape clause? Me too.

That cheesecake does look good. The Mexican chips and dip are irresistible. It is a special night. I can start again on Monday.

It is so tempting to give in. Set things in reverse. Pretend it won't matter. But it does matter and not just for the physical or mental set back. It's the denial of a fundamental spiritual truth that will make our healthy eating plan fall apart time and time again. What is this truth? We were made for more than this. More than this failure, more than this cycle, more than being ruled by taste buds - we were made for victory. Sometimes we just have to find our way to that truth.

When I was a senior in high school I was invited to a college party. By the end of the night my friends and I were giggling over the attention of two good looking college boys. As the party died down, they invited us over to their place.

A GOOD CROP OF HEALTH

"...So let's not allow ourselves to get fatigued doing good. At the right time we will harvest a good crop if we don't give up, or quit."  Galatians 6:9

"Summing it all up, friends, I'd say you'll do best by filling your minds and meditating on things true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, gracious—the best, not the worst; the beautiful, not the ugly; things to praise, not things to curse. Put into practice what you learned from me, what you heard and saw and realized. Do that, and God, who makes everything work together, will work you into his most excellent harmonies." Philippians 4:8

The Apostle Paul wrote the majority of the New Testament.  He was an inspirational fellow!  He himself encountered Jesus Christ while he was out searching for and imprisoning Christians and putting some of them to death.

That encounter literally knocked him off his horse and he was struck blind for a few days.  When he recovered he began what I would contend was one of the most historical and far reaching  turn arounds the world has ever seen!

Now I'm no Apostle Paul, but I have been in the process of the biggest turn around that I have ever done in my life!  The course of Paul's life changed history and the world.  My turn around is somewhat less noble and much less far reaching.  Its significance is really only very important to me and my family and some friends.

I've been planting seeds for better health and  I have been reprogramming my mind towards more positive thinking about myself, my life and my hopes and dreams.

A DIETER'S PRAYER

Keep my priorities straight, O God.  Let me not make food my god.  Fill me with Your power and might to resist urges and impulses. Amen

"OLYMPIC" WEIGHT MANAGEMENT

If I wanted to be an Olympic athlete would I just show up at tryouts one day with no preparation and expect to prevail?

Sounds silly doesn’t it?

Oftentimes we look at dieting that way though.

As discussed in earlier posts, we really don’t like to be troubled with the details of what it takes for successful weight loss. We want weight loss to be "trouble free and easy".

We want to eat a “little less” throw in some fruit and vegetables and count walking up and down the aisles of the frozen novelties section as exercise.

[AND WE WANT QUICK DRAMATIC RESULTS!]

As long as we are dreaming lets win the big lottery too!

People who are seriously approaching the decision to do something about their weight need to “get ready to get ready”.

That’s what I said.

If you are serious about losing weight you need to “get ready to get ready!”

What do I mean?

Well if you had aspirations to be an Olympic athlete but had never really developed athletic skills such as physical stamina and strength, what would you have to do first?

You’d start slowly. You would wait patiently to see results.

You would build up your muscles and you would exercise.  You’d begin to train your body to be conditioned for more and more strenuous exercise.

YOU WOULD BEGIN TRAINING.

You would not expect to have an Olympic athlete’s body overnight.  It would take years! You would accept that without a second thought.

 You would be purposeful.

You’d get associated with other like-minded individuals.

You’d seek out a coach, a mentor - a training buddy.

You’d be teachable.

You’d put yourself in the hands of experts and listen to what they said.

You’d train with many different exercises to work over the whole body, and you’d exercise specific muscles and train for your particular athletic discipline.
You would practice, practice practice!!

And speaking of discipline, yes, you would learn that skill as well.  In fact without the skill of discipline, you may as well stop before you get started.  Have courage though, part of your training would help you develop that skill too.

You’d read material about your sport, and you’d watch others as they developed their skills, learning from their successes and failures.  You’d study films of yours and others performances.

You would take constructive feedback from your coaches…you would adapt to a new way of living.

You’d get mentally tough and you would focus…oh how you would FOCUS!!

You’d make sacrifices of time, money and anything that would distract you from achieving your goal to make the Olympic team in your sport.
And you’d do this for years often with no recognition, often weary and discouraged, sometimes even wondering if it was worth it.

[And many, many of the people you train with wouldn’t make the cut and they’d quit.]

But YOU would PERSEVERE!

In order to be successful you’d train this way to achieve what very few people ever achieve; and even if you got selected to represent your country in your sport there would be no guarantee of victory.  You could do all this work for years, be in tremendous shape, excel beyond 99.9% of the rest of the world and still come in last at the Olympics.

Someone always comes in last!

Does that mean the training and years of sacrifice weren’t worth it?

The medals, if you’re talented enough to win one, are merely a symbol( a truly FANTASTIC symbol), but the benefits of being an Olympian (win or lose) last a lifetime!

Well, you can see where I’m headed.  Losing weight (and keeping it lost) is a lot like going into training to become an Olympian.

You get ready to manage weight by getting ready to act like an Olympian.  Many of the same characteristics apply.

“WEIGHT MANAGEMENT” is not for wimps!

 Notice I said “weight management”.

Getting ready to get ready is just as much about retraining your thinking habits as it is about retraining “bad eating habits” into “weight management eating habits”.

(The worst fat in my body is situated between my ears!)

An Olympic weight loss manager practices their skills until they no longer think of weight management as a “diet”.

When it comes to weight loss and weight management I like to say that “we are all in this together by ourselves”.

Personally, I need group support.  I’ll take an “atta boy” from anyone.

But I face the refrigerator and cupboards by myself!

No one is holding a gun to my head forcing that 3 pound bag of chips and half-gallon container of French onion dip down my throat.

I stand on the scale alone.

I realize that the sun does not rise or set on a bad (or good!) day of weight management.

I retrain my thinking to -!!STOP!! - saying that "since I really failed at my lunch, I will just fail the rest of the day and start fresh tomorrow."

No!!

I will eat my snacks and supper just as if I didn’t fall off my plan at lunchtime!  There is no more “wait till tomorrow”.

I will forgive myself, I will agree that weight management can be difficult (or darn near impossible at moments) but I will not have a pity party and crawl back to that carton of ice cream.

Let me let you in on a little secret, whatever that food is -  that is tempting you to crawl back to it -  is not your friend! You will "love it" and it will "leave you"..with bulgier hips, more thunderous thighs and crying in your chip dip!!

I will keep the real goal in mind…not a number on the scale, a healthier happier me!

I think this goal is more important for us than any gold medal!

I am in “Olympic [weight management] training” with some of these HEAVY THOUGHTS, and it is my intention that it will result in my LIGHTER LIVING!

WEIGHT LOSS IS EASY!

Sure it is!

The theory is quite simple:”Consume fewer calories each day than you burn and you will lose weight.”

Straightforward.

Simple.

Easy!

There!  What problem would you like me to solve now?? :-)

Ok, I know.  The theory is simple.

The rules of weight loss are a lot like the rules to the game of chess.  Thirty minutes will get you the basics of chess, but it can take a lifetime to master the game.

And losing weight is no game!

And for me anyway, it has taken all of my 51 years to begin to get the application of what it takes to lose and keep off the weight.

I learn a little each day.

Somewhere along the line of this current reduced eating phase of my life I’ve emotionally accepted that I am no longer dieting.

 I will never “diet” again.

 Ever.

Period, paragraph, explanation point!

The way I am eating now is now the way I live, literally.

My pastor recently showed me how I used to walk up and down stairs.  If he wasn’t so serious about it I would have thought he was kidding around.  He had it down pat. The way I slowly came down the stairs in pain with each step, balancing precariously and holding on to the railing for support, and completely out of breath was the way I was.

He told me he seriously wondered when he’d be called upon to conduct my funeral.  He figured it would be sooner rather than later.

He was right.

I didn’t know how bad I felt until I started feeling better!

My mom died of breast/lung/brain cancer at the age of 70.

My dad died of lung cancer at the age of 57.

My sister died of breast cancer at the age of 51.

I had given up trying to lose weight.  Why go to all the hassle of another failed diet when cancer’s just around the next bend waiting for me anyway?

Trouble was, what life I did have left, was getting so miserable with the strain of morbid obesity, I could no longer afford to wait for cancer!

I was already miserable enough!

(New readers will want to visit my permanent page marked “How Did I Get Here??” for that part of my story.)

Rereading this, I can imagine what you are thinking.  I was pretty hopeless, depressed and trying to commit suicide…one spoonful at a time.

Yep.

If you’ve ever been exposed to any 12 step program they call that:”Stinking Thinking”. And I had a seemingly incurable dose of it.

People loved me and prayed for me…that is all I can attribute to what has begun turning my life around.  I had given up…but my wife; family, friends and my doctor had not…thank God!

Yes! Let’s not forget God who instills love, who is love, who looked at my miserable sinfully obese life and loved me through these people!  They loved me when I no longer much loved or cared for myself any longer.

Sighhhhhh.

Surprised by love.

So now I choose to live.

I will never “diet” again and I will fight cancer “tooth and toenail “if it ever comes.

“IF” not when!

To that end (no pun intended!), I had a colonoscopy performed this morning as a preventative measure because of my family history of cancer.

 Yes it is a hassle.

I also had to undergo the additional indignity of six enemas this morning as well.

They (and you know who you are!) are right; I really am “full of it!”

The results?  A-OK!

I’ve chosen to have a lot of life in my days, no matter how long I live.

Eating well and taking care of me is now part of the new plan.

So these heavy thoughts rattle around inside my brain, but they do now urge me toward lighter living.

I can live with that.

MARVELOUS AND WONDERFUL THINGS

"This is God's Message, the God who made earth, made it livable and lasting, known everywhere as God: 'Call to me and I will answer you. I'll tell you marvelous and wondrous things that you could never figure out on your own. " Jeremiah 33:2

I can’t do it myself.

Even though I have lost a lot of weight in years past, I have always gained back EVERY SINGLE POUND…AND MORE!

There was no “winning” the “losing” battle for me.

In fact, it is so embarrassing to lose weight and then gain it all back plus,
I had given up trying to ever get thin again.

I wanted to just be contentedly fat and forget about it.

Losing weight and regaining it is a very public venture when you’ve been as large as I have been and then experience significant weight loss.

The compliments are pure delight! (And people finally feel free to tell you how horrible you looked and how worried that you would drop over dead of a heart attack someday.)

Sigh.

However, they eventually stop when the “new thin you” becomes the “new normal you”. If you’re lucky enough to keep you weight off for awhile, you just become another regular looking person.

No problem there.

Just start gaining weight back though, lots of problems here!

There are a normal circle of friends and acquaintances that see you regularly enough that the weight gains may be subtle enough they won’t notice the first thirty pounds or so. But the first double-take you get from someone you haven’t seen in awhile is devastating!

I can always fill in what they are thinking…”Wow, he’s let himself go again!” or “When will he ever learn?” or even worse, “There goes dead man walking.” (Or in my case “shuffling”.)
Please God, let me just crawl under a rock and die! Instead of the scarlet letter “A” make mine a triple “F” for Freakin’ Fat Failure!!

By the way, people think about you a lot less than you think they do. You are not the center of anyone’s universe except your own.

I filled in these thoughts that I assumed other people were thinking of me from my own bad feelings way more than people actually took time to think about me.

Of course, when you’re me, the immediate solution to feeling that “unclean” is to order a “garbage” pizza with lots of extra cheese! Go home, turn off the phone, sit in the dark and channel surf TV the rest of your life.

If you don’t know what a “garbage” pizza is, you don’t have a weight problem.

• If you have bad feelings and want to cry (or put your fist through the wall)…eat food! Eating always makes anything and everything better!
Always!!
Note…There may be enough food in the world to make me feel better, but I’ll never be able to eat it all!
• Be the life of the party, maybe people will like you in spite of being a rotund freak.
• Be “jolly” and make self-deprecating jokes: “I’m so fat my beeper went off and people thought I was backing up!” Or my personal favorite: “I can’t get a suntan! Every time I lay out at the beach, people gather around me, cry ‘Beached Whale!’ and roll me back in the ocean!”
So I had given up riding the roller coaster of fat man, thinner man, fatter man…GOOD GRIEF!

Just let me be a “comfortable fat”… (whatever that means).

I tried that from waist size 38” to 54” this last time.

At no time did I ever level off.
I never really stopped “watching my weight” even when I was in total denial about what I looked like and how I really felt. I just watched my weight increase.
Watching your weight…increase or decrease is your choice.

I cannot (to date) just maintain. Though I have high hopes that I am getting the tools this time around to do so.

People who don’t have a weight problem just watch what and how much they eat automatically. Hence they don’t struggle with their weight, but they make correct choices consistently… (or they have a pact with the Devil!)

So I cannot do it myself, but God has helped me. He has shown me “marvelous and wondrous things that I could never figure out on my own”.

Largely this time thru Mercy Weight Loss Center, specifically Megan, Heather, Jennifer and Ashley.

Does God the Father, the Lord Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit use places and people like that?

All the time!

They have shown me “marvelous and wondrous things that I could never figure out on my own” about weight loss, nutrition and weight management.
A fact of which I am eternally grateful for!

And these are some more of the heavy thoughts that circle around in my brain, (sometimes prompted by the Holy Spirit), urging me towards lighter living.

LETS NOT GET TIRED OF BEING GOOD TO OURSELVES

"So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up." Galatians 6:9 (New Living Translation)

Ok, I admit it. Sometimes it gets tiring to always make the right food choices. To always think about what and how much I’m eating. It would be nice not to always have my guard up. Don’t I ever get to catch a break?

But not doing these things only brought me to where I no longer was in control of my life, my health and I was largely unhappy with my life.

Today I feel so much better than before I started clawing my way out from morbid obesity.

It’s like the Apostle Paul told us, don’t get tired of doing what is good. In this case I am doing “good” to myself. I am reaping a harvest of physical and emotional blessings!

Which is not to say that anyone should ever lose the chance to do good to or for someone else!
It is not selfish to take care of yourself, or put your needs ahead of others...sometimes. If I'm honest with myself I know the difference between taking care of me and selfishly putting ME first.

I get a lot of compliments on my weight loss…that is reaping a blessing!

I do not need to walk with a cane or use the car door to pull myself up out of the car anymore…blessing!

I seldom get out of breath (even when I’m really exercising)…blessing!

I no longer care where I park the car…I can walk again…blessing!

I no longer stay in the car and wait for my wife to shop; I get to go with her…blessing! Not kidding either!

The smaller portions of food I eat now taste supremely better than the mindless bucketfuls I used to snarf down before. I really didn’t even taste the stuff I used to put thru my lips and over the gums, look out stomach here it comes! Again…blessing!

Really there is no comparison to my former way of death via eating vs. the new way of eating to live!

So I remind myself to not get weary in doing good for others like the Bible instructs us, but I also remind myself it’s ok to be good to me too!

Ah my friends, these are some of the heavy thoughts that keep me moving towards lighter living.
